You couldn’t control more than one character. In the multiplayer campaign, there was no mule. I realized that because people kept talking about all kinds of things that I never saw in the multiplayer campaign. All this lore that I’m picking up, the backstory, is it all about Dungeon Siege III, or are there portions that indicate what happened in Dungeon Siege 1 and 2? It was only recently I realized that I’d never actually played the official campaign in Dungeon Siege 1.
